Mopanie (Cholophospermum Mopani) is a durable hardwood that makes excellent long lasting coals.
-
Mopani wood is very heavy. The average dry weight of Mopanie is approximately 1075 kg/ cubic meter.
-
It compares well with Hardekool (Combretum Imberbe) which is South Africa's heaviest hardwood weighing in at an average of 1230 kg / cubic meter. However, unlike Hardekool, Mopanie is not an endangered species.
-
Vanderbraai regards Mopanie as the "Jaques Kallis"of braai! It is an all-rounder that will not dissappoint!
-
Sekelbos consists of two sub-species in South Africa, namely the Large-leaf Sekelbos (Dichrostachys Ceneria subsp. Nyassana) and the Small-leaf Sekelbos(Dichrostachys Ceneria subsp. Africana).
-
The difference between the two is in the braai. The large -leafed Sekelbos (which grows at large in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga, tends to be stubborn to dry out and the coals are not as hot or durable as that of the small-leafed Sekelbos.
-
The Small-leafed Sekelbos also makes excellent long lasting coals and gives a very nice flavour to meat.
-
The average dry weight of Small-leafed Sekelbos is around 1075 kg/ cubic meter.
-
Knoppiesdoring (Vichellia Nigrescens)is a thorn tree named after its familiar bark that is "knobbed".
-
Larger trees have dark brown to black heartwood and the wood is very dense. The average dry weight of Knoppiesdoring is around 1100 kg/ cubic meter.
-
It takes long to burn out making it an excellent "kuier hout"and makes very hot coals that is ideal for red meat.
-
The wood from very old trees might sometimes be mistaken for Hardekool the grain and colour are often similar to Hardekool.
